On August 19, 2007, Gerry “Chief” Frierdich, who had been a regular on our rides, was struck from behind by a pick-up truck while riding his bicycle to meet friends for a golf game. Gerry woke up five weeks later a quadriplegic. Although he has made significant progress over time, each day has been a challenge for him, both physically and emotionally. Ongoing physical therapy is critical to Gerry’s day-to-day life and, since Gerry is unable to work or care for himself, he is forced to rely on family and friends for help. No one knows what lies ahead for him, but Gerry remains motivated to achieve the goals he has set for himself. Bicycling routes of 6, 15, 30 and 50 miles are available, plus walkers will have a separate 2-mile route. The cost of the ride is $25 for adults, $15 for children 13-18 and $5 for cyclists 5 and younger. For more information about the ride, including online registration, visit the ride's web page at the BABES web site.
