All rides of the Belleville Area Bicycling and Eating Society are free to members of Hostelling International and $3 for non-members.

While BABES rides are open to cyclists of all skill levels, it's helpful if you feel comfortable with reading maps and following road signs before attending one of our rides. But if you aren't, we will help you become a more self-sufficient cyclist!

Help out a good cause

As most of you know, Belleville Area Bicycling and Eating Society regular Gerry Frierdich, a noted photographer, was critically injured in August 2007 when a pickup truck struck Gerry while he was riding his recumbent bicycle on South Green Mount Road in Belleville, Ill.

The BABES, in conjunction with The Touring Cyclist bicycle shop in Fairview Heights and friends and family of Gerry, put on a benefit bicycle ride for him on Sunday, June 1, at Central Junior High School in Belleville. More than 300 people attended the ride, which raised thousands of dollars for Gerry's future medical care and other necessities.

Wednesday Evening Rides continue

Our final two Wednesday Evening Rides of 2008 will take place Sept. 3 and Sept. 10 in Columbia, Ill., but that doesn't mean our cycling season is over. We have four of our popular Winery Rides slated for September and October. For more information about our events, visit our Ride Calendar.

In July 2004, Bicycling Magazine included the BABES Wednesday Evening Rides in its "Bikes on the Loose" feature of great club rides from throughout the country. We were honored to be on the list.

As a service to St. Louis-area cyclists, BABES ride leaders are sharing maps of their favorite routes in the metro-east. Illinois always has been a favorite destination for St. Louis-area cyclists because of its scenic, low-traffic country roads. You can download the maps on our Maps page.
